Activist Linda Sarsour, co-chair of the 2017 women's march against Donald Trump, called for a "jihad" against the president at the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) convention in Chicago.
Sarsour urged fellow Muslims to “stand up to those who oppress our communities,” as “we are struggling against tyrants and rulers not only abroad in the Middle East or on the other side of the world, but here in these United States of America.”
After her words provoked outrage all social media, she claimed that jihad does not mean violence and she herself wasn't talking about violence.
But some interpreted her used of the “jihad,” which according to Islam means “to struggle”, as a call for violence.
The word has many uses in the Islamic faith, but has been used by terrorists such as ISIS and often is translated as “holy war.”.
